Canyon retreat

After living for 20 years (and raising two children) in their first home, our clients search but cannot find what they want in a new house. Realizing they love the fragrant nights and gnarled Oak trees of their existing Mandeville Canyon home, they embark on a complete renovation. With the help of a design team, they transformed a 1960’s ranch house into a home that is creativity and deeply connected to three important things: the couple’s love of nature, the home’s specific location, and the relationships and memories that sustain them. The result is a light infused house that embodies a SoCal lifestyle while illustrating eclectic ways to imbue a home with meaningful connections to family, location- and now perhaps more important than ever- nature. For example, when the couple was newly married, her father built Adirondack chairs for the yard. Two decades later we had them carefully repaired with high gloss yellow paint and placed them on an elevated plateau to be visible from many vantage points throughout the house and garden. Now the memory of her father will always be present.
