Palo Alto Garden

Two demanding jobs, teenagers, and a new city. This newly relocated family was eager for their new, busy lives to be focused on social activity, not maintenance. The less effort the better.  Our landscape renovation at their beautiful Joseph Eichler house on a hill focused on seamless indoor/outdoor transitions to make the most of limited space. We increased the square footage of living area by designing a simple, concrete patio along the slope. Here, friends can gather under an umbrella’s shade or sit along the bar-ledge at the window. Below, hardy shrubs limit views of nearby neighbors.  Carex instead of lawn surrounds the patio with green yet is drought-tolerant and low maintenance.  A new entry courtyard of gravel and new entry drive of turf block are both graphic and sensible, needing little attention while artfully complimenting the architecture.
