RAvine house

Knowing they had the right architect to design their dream home, the clients put a lot of effort into finding the right location. That effort paid off. Set atop a deep ravine along Lake Michigan, they found a property with a strong connection to nature and views of trees everywhere they looked. They wanted the beauty and drama of site to inform the design of the house and the landscape.

Our approach was simple: create pockets of beauty that enhance rather than distract from the natural beauty of the property. The client incorporated pops of color inside her otherwise neutrally-toned house. We responded in kind with moments of annual and perennial color by the front door and the swimming pool area. The rest of the landscape takes cues from the ravine; the hardscape is neutral and simple and the plant palette is subtle, blending seamlessly with the natural beauty of the site.
